Yes To Recalls Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Mask - Allure Magazine

"We have directed the stores to refund anyone who returns a not-used purchased mask to the store and have advised them to let the customers who have already used the product to contact Yes To at customercare@yesto.com or by phone at 888.929.3786 for a refund."

While it's still not clear what exactly caused some consumers to report burning sensations and redness from Yes To's sheet mask, you don't have to fear sheet masks altogether. Board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner says that you may be more prone to develop irritation if you are using such a mask in conjunction with other skin-care products known to cause sensitivity like retinol, exfoliators, certain types of toners, or acne products.

In the event of such a reaction to a sheet mask, Zeichner recommends removing the product immediately and washing one's face thoroughly with a gentle cleanser. If the skin is inflamed, he recommends applying petroleum jelly to create a protective barrier over the damaged skin; a hydrocortisone ointment is another option, he says. If the rash doesn't improve within a few hours, you should visit your dermatologist.

Board-certified dermatologist Shari Marchbein agrees and notes that over-the-counter products like sheet masks are not tested or regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, which makes it harder to really pinpoint why so many people had such a harsh reaction to the mask.

"[Sheet masks] are not held to the same stringent testing for safety and quality as something that I'd prescribe," she tells Allure. "So you could have allergic reactions or irritation to various ingredients because it's not held to the same kind of [standard]."

Because of unknown factors like contamination or allergies, it can be hard to prevent a harsh reaction to a product. If you do have sensitive skin, cosmetic chemist Ginger King says to avoid anything that asks you to leave the sheet on for 15 to 20 minutes as it will accentuate potential skin issues; she recommends five minutes to see if a reaction occurs and then steadily increase it to 10.

Zeichner suggests doing a patch test by squeezing the mask's serum onto your hand to test for irritation.

So as always, you'll want to do your homework and be smart about the ingredients you put on your face.
