An iconic grove of palm trees at the Borrego Palm Canyon trailhead caught fire Saturday.
The blaze was reported about 12:50 p.m. As of 2:30 p.m. the fire remained at a half-acre, with a slow rate of spread, according to Cal Fire.
Hand crews were cutting a containment line around the fire and were being assisted by other ground crews and a helicopter, fire officials said.
A photo on the Anza Borrego Foundation’s Facebook page showed a massive blaze at the mouth of the canyon and towering plumes of smoke. The Facebook page said the smoke was visible from nearby Borrego Springs.
