Palm Bay targets suspected drug dealers, narcotics trade after recent spate of drug-connected homicides - Florida Today

Cracking down on what police said is an increase in drug-related violence, Palm Bay Police Chief Nelson Moya announced the agency has arrested over 50 people connected with the South Brevard narcotics trade.

The move came after four recent drug-related or drug-connected homicides took place on the city’s east side, including one violent episode that possibly was a botched drug robbery that left two people dead in a northeast Palm Bay neighborhood, police said.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families of these recent tragic events," Moya said in a statement sent to FLORIDA TODAY about the recent shootings that have taken place in the city, including at a Halloween house party and in a city park.

In response, Moya has talked to neighborhood leaders and ordered more visible patrols in several locations across the 100-square-mile city.

Since Halloween, there have been five deadly shootings.

The most recent was Sunday night at Lynbrook Park in the northwest section of the city.

An 18-year-old was shot and killed by a 20-year-old in the park, police said.

There have been 32 reported homicides in Brevard County so far in 2019. Six have been in Palm Bay.

"Since these recent shootings, we have been in constant contact with our civic leaders and well engaged with our community at large. Our city is made up of people that care for each other and that take an active role in crime prevention," Moya said.

"We are thankful to have the support of our community as we take measures to keep our city safe."

Palm Bay police worked with Melbourne police and others to make the arrests, most of which were connected to the illegal drug trade. The names of those arrested and their charges were not available Wednesday.

In recent weeks, Melbourne police have carried out similar arrests after incidents of violence.

Investigations continue into the Lynbrook Park shooting, which may have elements of a self-defense claim, police said.

Police said the arrests will continue in a bid to "curb future violence."
