Chief Nelson Moya said the three homicides that took place overnight Monday into Tuesday were "tragic" but not random as detectives look into drugs as a motivating factor in the two separate cases.
Palm Bay police were searching the area near 1000 block of Allamanda Road after a person of interest in Tuesday morning's homicide cases abandoned a car and fled on foot around 2:30 p.m.
Police conducted a traffic stop near Palm Bay Elementary and detained two people inside the vehicle. A third person—considered a person of interest—fled from the area. He was taken into custody just before 3 p.m., according to Lt. Mike Smith.
Palm Bay Elementary School was placed on temporary lockdown while police searched for the unidentified person of interest.
Investigations are underway in two separate cases involving three different homicides that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Officials believe the deaths of two men are connected after a potential drug robbery turned violent near Liberia Avenue and Henry Street. That shooting ended with Jalyn Decosta, 21, and Jerome Harris, 23, both dead of apparent gunshot wounds.
The death of a third man, found in a vehicle about 4 miles away in a vehicle on Agora Road, is not thought to be related to the first two deaths.
Police have not identified the 61-year-old man who was found dead in that case but continue to investigate.
Residents in the area heard gunshots but didn't immediately call police. Officers arrived nearly an hour later to find a car abandoned in the roadway with the man's body inside around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Lt. Tim Lancaster, with the Palm Bay Police Department, said two men were shot and killed — one at Liberia Avenue and Henry Street and another man was shot near Agora Road and Enterprise Avenue.
At this time, the shootings of the two men were believed to be connected to each other.
"There are three confirmed victims at this point," said Lancaster.
Lancaster was stationed at Dorothea Fields Avenue, which connects Liberia Avenue and Henry Street, at 7 a.m. as crime scene investigators begin their inspection of the scene in the light of day.
"There's a whole lot of crime scene people here right now," Lancaster said.
Police found a third body, and what Lancaster said was an unrelated shooting death, at Agora Circle Southeast and Enterprise Avenue. A man's body was found in a vehicle.
"The third person is unrelated to the first two deaths," Lancaster said. "Both crime scenes are being worked at this point, literally as we speak."
