Actress and liberal activist Jane Fonda railed against the environmental impact of palm oil and singled out its use in some vaginal lubricants.
"I’m embarrassed to admit that up until a few years ago, I didn’t know anything about the evils of palm oil," the 82-year-old Fonda said in a speech at a Friday climate protest in Washington, D.C.
Referencing Grace and Frankie, the Netflix series in which she stars with actress Lily Tomlin, Fonda regaled her audience with an anecdote from the second season of the show, when her character, Grace, "very innocently" places palm oil in the homemade vaginal lubricant she planned to sell. Tomlin was arrested during Friday's protests.
"You know, older women, challenges," Fonda explained as an aside.
Grace and Frankie depicts the adventures of two older women whose husbands come out as gay and marry each other, forcing the two ex-wives to develop a close friendship.

When Tomlin's character, Frankie, found out that Grace was using palm oil, Fonda continued, "she went ballistic," adding, "Grace had never seen Frankie get that upset, because she loved orangutans! And palm oil trees were destroying the habitat of orangutans, and she went on a rant that Grace had never seen."
"That’s how I found out about the evils of palm oil," Fonda said, explaining how she was driven to research the topic for her role.
Fonda has been a recurring character at climate demonstrations on Capitol Hill. She was arrested repeatedly in the fall for unlawful demonstration in an attempt to force legislative action on climate change. "We’re going to get arrested every Friday," Fonda said in October. She has also pledged not to buy any more clothes for the sake of the climate.
