A Palm Bay man awoke in the night Saturday to find a family member stabbing him, according to police reports.
For days, Rodolfo Echevarria hadn't slept and had been having hallucinations as a result of using drugs, family members told police.
Echevarria had recently been released from prison in Missouri after a domestic violence conviction before relocating to Florida and staying with family in the 1600 block of Tharp Road in Palm Bay.
According to police reports, Echevarria possibly had been using methamphetamines leading up to the attack.
Echevarria's family member had been trying to calm Echevarria and help him sleep prior to the attack, police said.
He then woke up to Echevarria stabbing him. The man's wife entered the room and Echevarria punched her in the face, police said.

The man attempted to defend himself, placing Echevarria in a headlock. At that point, Echevarria grabbed a hammer and began hitting the man in the knees.
According to arrest reports, Echevarria demanded the family's car keys before leaving the home.
Another family member applied pressure to the stab wound on the man's neck after seeing him being stabbed twice and struck multiple times with the hammer.
Family members told police they believed the attack was predicated on hallucinations Echevarria had been having in which he believed a man was coming to the home to kill him.
Echevarria, 35, was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, robbery with a weapon, felony battery and grand theft of a motor vehicle.
He is being held at the Brevard County Jail without bond.
