DUI Patrols To Be Ramped Up Around Palm Desert - Palm Desert, CA Patch

PALM DESERT, CA — Deputies will ramp up DUI patrols around Palm Desert Saturday in an effort to stop drivers suspected of operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies will have an increased presence from 4 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday in areas associated with high rates of DUI arrests and crashes. The locations have not been made public.

In recent years, California has seen an increase in drug-impaired driving crashes, according to the department.

A total of 1,120 people were killed in alcohol-involved crashes on California roads in 2017.

Drivers taking prescription drugs, particularly those with a label warning about driving or operating machinery, may cause motorists to become impaired enough to get a DUI.

Marijuana can also be impairing, sheriff's officials said, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can also result in a DUI.

DUI arrests can lead to jail time and cost motorists up to $13,500. This includes fines, fees, classes, license suspensions and other expenses.

The operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
