Noah Palm is not a numbers guy.
Probably never will be.
“(Football) is a team sport,” the Cocalico senior standout said. “I couldn’t get to where I’m at without my team. They did a great job. So, numbers don’t matter to me. We all came together and played hard and played great.
“That’s, kind of, what matters.”
Well said.
But, man, if Noah Palm was a numbers guy, he’d have a lot to talk about. Because, especially in 2019, he put up a whole lot of numbers while helping Cocalico win the District 3 5A title.
Palm, who signed to play safety at New Hampshire, had 92 tackles — 12 for loss — with four interceptions, five passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and a sack. That helped him earn Lancaster -Lebanon Section 2 Defensive Back of the Year.
It also helped him secure his spot as PennLive’s Defensive Player of the Year for its All-Star team comprised of players from the Mid-Penn, L-L and Tri-Valley Leagues.
His numbers would be worthy if all he did was focus on defense. But Palm’s production wasn’t limited to one side of the ball. He was the Eagles starting quarterback, too, and he was a dual-threat, passing for 1,014 yards and nine touchdowns while running for another 1,432 yards and 33 touchdowns to help lead his team to a District 3 5A title.
Former Cocalico coach Dave Gingrich — he retired following the season — said Palm was the best player he ever coached.
“I don’t think we are winning a district championship and playing in a state semifinal if Noah Palm doesn’t have the year he has,” Gingrich said. “He carried us early. We were young. We were just Noah and a couple of other seniors and they really carried us until we got our feet wet.
“I don’t have words to say … offensively and defensively he did everything for us.”
Those are numbers — the amount of young guys Cocalico started the season with — that Palm doesn’t mind talking too much about. And despite all the touchdowns, yards, tackles and interceptions, how the group responded is what he’s most proud of.
“It was really cool how, in the summer, it was rough,” he said. “We didn’t know how good we were going to be. We had a rough spell, but we picked it up, played hard and had a great season.”
