CREATIVE PROCESS: STUDIO TOURS
Take your pick of several studio tours this weekend, or try to see them all. They’re free, self-guided and feature the work of more than 65 artists.
The Tampa Bay Tour De Clay includes the work of 33 professional potters specializing in functional and sculptural clay work. It’s spread out at five studios: Schiemann Studio in St. Petersburg; Pottery Boys Studio in Palm Harbor; Hidden Lake Pottery in Odessa; Wellman & Welsch Pottery in Lutz; and San Antonio Pottery, San Antonio. In addition to the artwork, there will be artist demonstrations, kiln openings, live music and refreshments. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Find a map at tampatourdeclay.com. Or get a map at Pottery Boys Studio, 30 Bogie Lane, Palm Harbor.
Roam funky Gulfport on the ArtJones studio tour and see the work of 19 artists working in painting, glass, ceramics, photography, mixed media and fiber. It’s organized by ceramic artist Brenda McMahon, who has a gallery in Gulfport featuring the work of many of these artists. Grab a map there and get a taste of what to expect on the tour. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. 2901 Beach Blvd. S. Find a map at artjonesstudiotour.com.
Fiber and mixed media artist Donna Isaac is the force behind the Art Life studio tour that includes 14 artists in five studios throughout St. Petersburg. This tour is heavy on fiber art but also includes lampwork glass, pottery, handcrafted sterling silver jewelry and photography. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Visit Isaac’s studio at 1224 48th Ave. N for a map.
ALL THAT AND THEN SOME: DFAC’S POTTERY SALE
The Dunedin Fine Art Center’s annual pottery sale and open house is a highly anticipated event. Folks can score functional and decorative pottery from the center’s faculty and students. Last year, the printmaking department got in on the action. And this year the wood-turning department followed suit, so there is a plethora of handmade artwork to choose from. Plus, there will be demonstrations from faculty and a chance to win a free class, and the galleries will be open with multiple exhibitions. Apparently it’s become a popular holiday shopping event, so get there early for your best shot at that perfect gift. Free. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. 1143 Michigan Blvd. (727) 298-3322. dfac.org.
